Explore significant sites of Phnom Penh. Take in some beautiful historical locations, important temples and monuments as well as the darker history sites of the Khmer Rouge genocide.
1. After morning pick-up the first stop will be at a couple of the most significant sites in Phnom Penh, Lady Penh Statue and Wat Phnom. Learn who Phnom Penh is named after and why. Temple Entry: $1.
2. Wat Onnalom was originally built in 1442 and is one of the most important Temples in Phnom Penh. Free
3. Admire one of the most beautiful examples of Cambodian architecture of the National Museum and Royal Palace. Beautiful photo opportunities in the morning with the sun to the east. Outside visit: Free
4. Cambodian Vietnam Friendship Monument which commemorates the former alliance between the two countries. It is located near the Royal Palace. Free
5. A short Tuk-Tuk ride from the city is Diamond Island. A prior swamp, now developing into a satellite city of Phnom Penh. Along the way see The Patriarch of Monks Statue, Buddhist Institute, Cambodian Parliament Buildings, China Town, and the confluence of the Tonle Sap, Upper and Lower Mekong Rivers and Tonle Bassac Rivers. Learn about the rivers that meet here and the unusual and unique flows in both directions of the Tonle Sap.
6. The King Norodom Sihanouk Statue stands on the popular Park Strip of Phnom Penh. Built in honour of the King in 2013 after his death, access to the park strip is free.
7. The impressive Independence Monument is nearby and represents independence of Cambodia from French colonisation which lasted for 90 years, from 1863 - 1953. Park Strip entry is free.
8. Visit the darker and more tragic side of Cambodian history at the Genocide Museum. The now Museum was formally a girls school but became the site of imprisonment, torture and holding enclosure before being transported to the Killing Fields. Entry is $10 which includes an audio guide.
9. 45 minutes away is the Killing Fields, the second significant historical site of the Khmer Rouge Genocide in Phnom Penh. Entry is $6 and includes an audio guide.
10. The Russian Market is the final stop of the day for a more relaxed time of browsing and shopping. Many items in the market have been sourced from local businesses and organisations. Free entry.
