الوصف
Join Sabine Rath’s WWII tour of Salzburg. Explore USFA’s command center, and see wartime ruins at Kapitel Square, Mönchsberg, and Salzburg Cathedral. Discover gripping wartime stories and sites.
With Sabine Rath, an official Austria Guide, you will immerse yourself in the moving chapter of Salzburg during the Second World War. Your journey begins at the traditional Mozartplatz, where the United States Forces in Austria (USFA) once established a command centre. Here Sabine Rath vividly describes how this place became a control centre after the war.
From there, the route leads to the historic quayside district. As you stroll through the narrow alleyways of Pfeifergasse, Krotachgasse and Kaigasse, Sabine Rath shows you impressive pictures of the destroyed neighbourhood, including the destroyed Nonnbergstiege and the bomb craters on the site of today's Papageno Square. Her stories make the devastation of the war in this area tangible.
Once you reach Kapitel Square, you will be treated to a breathtaking view of Hohensalzburg Fortress, which miraculously remained almost intact. The tour continues to the magnificent Salzburg Cathedral. Here, historical photos illustrate the severe damage the building suffered during the war, including the collapse of the cathedral dome. Sabine Rath brings the past back to life.
The route continues towards Mönchsberg, where the ruins of former bunkers can still be found today. Sabine Rath tells you about the strategic considerations that made this place an important point of defence. At the Toscanihof you will discover an American memorial plaque commemorating the end of the war, which was decided here in the combat bunker inside the Mönchsberg on 4th May 1945.
In the festival district, Sabine Rath will take you into the world of the Salzburg Festival. You will learn how the artists of the time survived the war and what significance the Festival had during these difficult years. Another stop-off point is the Pferdeschwemme, behind which there was once a military hospital and a mine - silent witnesses to wartime.
The tour ends in the Bürgerspital (Citizens’ Hospital) and its inner courtyard, where you will learn about the former bunkers at this location. With her rich historical and military knowledge and her captivating stories, Sabine Rath paints a varied picture of Salzburg in one of the darkest periods of history.
"Salzburg in the Shadow of War" is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn more details about Salzburg's history. Let Sabine Rath take you on an unforgettable journey into the past!
