Lalibela: Mount. Asheten Half-Day Hiking Adventure

If your hotel does not provide breakfast, you will meet your trekking guide at 7 am in a local cafe where you can enjoy a solid start to your day. After 30-45 minutes, you will begin your half-day hike directly from the cafe. Within just 15 minutes, you will find yourself outside of town, above Lalibela, surrounded by nature.

As you make your way towards the mountain monastery Asheten Maryam, you will conquer hills along winding paths that have existed for many years. The breathtaking views will compel you to stop frequently, as you take in the sights of fields, quaint farmer's villages, curious children, and the occasional person selling handmade dolls, Coca Cola, tea, or coffee.

Whether you choose to visit and enter the monastery or simply bypass it, the view will be nothing short of perfect. During our journey, we will pause in one of the little villages for the renowned Ethiopian Coffee ceremony, which consists of three rounds and may take some time. Additionally, if you express interest, the homeowners will gladly showcase their way of life, allowing you to ask questions while your guide provides explanations. If you're fortunate, the farmer's wife might even demonstrate how to bake injera, our beloved Ethiopian bread, although this depends on whether she needs to prepare it in advance (as fermentation requires 3-4 days).

Afterward, we will leisurely make our way back to Lalibela. By around midday, you will return to your hotel, hopefully cherishing fond memories of the beautiful countryside surrounding Lalibela and the rural Ethiopian farmers' way of life. As an alternative, you may also choose to ride on the back of a mule or horse to reach the monastery.
