Geghard cave monastery The present name Geghard means Monastery of the Spear, which originates from the spear that pierced Jesus Christ at the crucifixion. The spear was brought to Armenia by Apostle Thaddeus and long housed at Geghard. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
