Tallinn is a beautiful and vibrant city with a rich history.
Tallinn is Estonia’s medieval, dynamic, capital city, bursting with history, culture, and amazing things to do and see. Tallinn is an interesting, lively city, with fun museums, hidden art exhibitions, and gorgeous architecture.
In addition to many gorgeous older buildings, the Toompea hills offer up some beautiful views over the city all around. Located in one of Estonia’s oldest parts, at the top of the Toompea Hill, the viewing area at the Patkuli has that picture-perfect view of the old town with its towers and walls. To reach the Patkuli viewing platform, you can climb the 157 steps up from the base of the cliff through the Patkuli stairs, or you can choose to do a more scenic hike through Tallinn’s old city, which should lead you past some of Tallinn’s prettiest attractions.
Visitors can ascend the narrow stairs up St. Olaf’s Church to enjoy the gorgeous views of the wonderful Old Town of Tallinn. This offers a panoramic view over Tallinn, as various church towers rise over Tallinn. Walking up a big rock wall here takes you up three towers altogether and gives you nice views out over the city back and over to the park to the other side.
It is one of the best examples of medieval alleyways in Tallinn, and you may find some old gravestones along the walls. You will find Tallinn’s city museum inside a former 14th-century merchants house that has a few fascinating architectural elements. If you stick to Tallinn’s old town, you will not come across a lot of art, but if you do delve into the city a bit, you are bound to come across some fascinating artwork. Tallinn is known for its stunning medieval centre, where you can wander around for hours on end in the narrow streets, hidden back yards, past former walls, churches, and ancient merchant houses.
In Old Town Vanalinn, walk through several landmarks and attractions, like city walls, gun towers, narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and old merchants’ houses. One of the best things to do in Tallinn during winter is to go there during Tallinn Christmas market, so that you can witness a completely new life brought into its UNESCO old city. Of course, in the hip capital of Estonia, one of the best things to do is to always roam around by yourself and become totally lost on the winding, turning streets of its Old Town. Whether stopping in to grab a drink or bite at one of the crowded places in the town hall square, or buying some souvenirs from a market, there is plenty for you to see and do, with several of the best-known sights of Tallinn in Estonia only a few minutes’ walk away.
In the centre of its main square, a UNESCO-listed old town, Raekoja plaza, is one of Estonia’s best-known sites, Tallinn’s tower hall. Raekoja Plats is Tallinn’s central square and is lined with colourful houses and a 15th-century city hall that is also the oldest city hall in the Baltic states and Scandinavia. Gothic in design, the Tallinn town hall sports a tall tower on top of which is hung a weathervane bearing Old Tomas, a symbol of and keeper of Tallinn, Estonia.
The interiors of the Gothic-styled Tallinn Town Hall are only opened to visitors as a museum in July and August; within, you will be able to witness colourful designs on the walls, intricate wooden carvings, and a breath-taking arched ceiling while learning about Tallinn and its history. Completed in 1404, Tallinn’s Gothic city hall boasts a 64-meter-tall spire with the weathervane of an ancient warrior (named Old Tomas), a Tallinn town guard and hero of the 16th century, who fought in the Livonian War. The exhibition is genuinely nice, you will have an amazing insight into Tallinn’s medieval history, as well as some cool info on the walls and the tower. If you want to simply stand at the top of Estonia’s hip old town walls, explore, and take in the views, a visit to Maiasmokk is enough.
