One of the best viewpoints of Berat is from a viewing stand within the castle at Berat, so make sure you make it to the very end. You just cannot visit Berat without taking the stroll (or ride) up to the castle, where you will have the best views over the town. The number one landmark of Berat (besides the views) is Berat Castle, aka the Kahla.

Arguably, the most popular place to visit in Berat is an ancient castle located strategically atop the hill, dating from Illyrian times. The Cala is the beautiful ancient castle in Berat, located at the top of the hill, which is a great spot for viewing Berat from the air.

Once you get into the Kala Berat, or the castle in Berat, you will see homes still lived in by the locals, and walk the ancient alleyways filled with souvenir shops, coffee shops, and byzantine churches. Aside from its walls themselves, the main points of interest inside Berat Kala (Castle) include the 14th-century Holy Trinity Church, the 13th-century Church of Saint Mary of Blachernae, with its stunning murals, and remnants of an ancient acropolis, including the underground water tank.

You will need several hours to explore the inner parts of Berat Kala (castle) (plus an additional 30-90 minutes to visit the museum--see next section). Once you are done exploring Berat Castle, you can head down a steep hill to the National Museum of Ethnography.

Opened in 1979, the Ethnographic Museum displays Berats history and contains some original artifacts from the old times, including clothes, tools, and home objects. Originally a home, the ethnographic museum has been turned into a museum, and it is possible to see how traditional Berat houses are constructed, from furniture to house objects, even the well. The National Museum in Onufri has many rooms which gives an idea about how life is like in Berat.

It is located inside St. Marys Chapel, the inside of the castle of Berat. Currently, the Saint Mary Church houses Onufri National Museum, which has collected some of Albanias best-known icons by Albanian artists from various churches of Berat, which are now displayed at this museum. Although the Onufri museum is located within Kalaja, it deserves a spot on a top ten places to visit list for Berat.

The Balata (castle) was founded to preserve the collection of icons, works of art, and artifacts that were salvaged from the rubble of the Berat Albanian religious buildings. Located within the grounds of the castle, Berat Kala (castle) is located within St. Marys Dormition church, a Byzantine triple-nave basilica restored in 1797.
